Roll the die:
Three successes means your character is safe for now.
Three failures means your character is defeated.
Look at the icons:
Rolling a success icon (heart outline) moves you closer to safety.
Rolling a failure icon (broken bone) moves you closer to defeat.
Rolling a critical failure icon (skull and crossbone) is a bad roll and counts as two failures.
Rolling a critical success icon (heartbeats) is a great roll and saves your character immediately!
