Games that redesign tradition!
Day 14 of our Advent Calendar Gift Guide sees us recommend three games for the traditionalist!
Hive
Hive is a game you want to win but struggle to play - the clinking pieces are so gorgeous you'd prefer to keep them in your hands! Add that to the game's use of tactical strategy and it's a miracle a game ever gets finished! Each player is assigned counters that feature various minibeasts. Every insect has a different function in the game, e.g. the grasshopper can jump forward over counters, but only in a straight line, while the beetle can climb on top of other counters to freeze them still. The first player to surround their opponent's Queen Bee with assorted creatures is the winner and new leader of all creepy crawlies! It's nature's chess!
Quoridor
Quoridor , the amazing-maze game, is a must among strategy games. Its rules are amazingly simple: just make it through the maze your opponent creates to get to the other side. Quoridor requires strategy and quick thinking. This fast-paced game is suitable for two or four players and games lasts around 15 minutes. This 'mini' edition enables you to take Quoridor with you, and play where ever you like.
Onitama
Onitama is a brilliant little abstract strategy game with a random starting set-up and a set number of actions that really test players abillity to thing ahead and work out your opponent tactics! Played on a 5x5 board, both players start with five pawns on their side, with the main pawn in the middle. The aim if the game is a little like chess, in that players need to take the enemy pawns and main pawn to win, or alternativly they need to get their own main pawn into the space their oppenents main pawn started in, as this also wins the game. To make this even more difficult players only have a limited amount of movement to use!
