Rules of Play, Cardiff's one-stop-shop for board games and gaming events, is here for your every tabletop need! The events below are just a 1 month sample - we hold weekly events throughout the entire year. Check out our Facebook events to see them all!
To celebrate the wonder of youth - and to give new or nervous Freshers a couple of fun event options during a scary period - we're offering FREE entry to all our board game nights during the month of October!
All you have to do is bring your NUS Freshers card* and you'll walk in for free!
*No second or third years, we're afraid. Shouldn't you guys be doing coursework?!
Why we're doing it
We've all been stranded as students in brand new cities, making brand new friends. It can feel daunting!
We reckon it's much easier to get out there and explore your new surroundings - in this case, Cardiff - if you've got a fun event to go to where you can meet people and do cool stuff.
What you can expect at our board game nights
They're incredibly sociable and full of great people - great for anyone nervous or shy!
Typically, depending on the venue, it's between 3-5 hours of stone cold tabletop gaming.
There are often burgers, and there's always beer...
There'll be Rules of Play staff on hand to teach you the games and set up groups together. That's why it doesn't matter if you turn up alone, 'cos we'll make sure you slide on in to a game in no time!
Alternatively, you can turn up as a fully formed group and just get stuck in.

Board games at The Gate
The return of The Gate! This lovely arts centre in Roath used to be our home for monthly gaming events - now it's a welcome return to our roots!
Top tip: there's a bar available serving drinks and foodie stuff.

This city centre venue is stuffed full of craft beers and burgers to die for! Every Monday we commandeer the 3 rooms on the top floor for our weekly #BoardGameBar.
Top tip: the burgers are all fantastic, but the Pizza Burger is the nectar of gods.

Games at The Lansdowne
We're in Canton too, y'know! Think chilled vibes, drinks, and games. The latest-running of our events, 'Games at The Lansdowne' goes on until 11pm.
Top tip: as the local pub for one of the Rules of Play owners, the beer comes personally recommended!

Our second #BoardGameBar 'special edition' event is a Ticket to Ride Takeover!
Great for lovers of the game and newbies alike, this is a chance to play tabletop's biggest game for hours on end, uninterrupted. Ahh, glorious.
