Friday Rules: 31.10.2014

News

Game of the Week - Mansions of Madness. IT'S HALLOWEEN, PEOPLE! BOO, AN' ALL THAT! Kicking off this Friday Rules is a creepy spook-fest for 2-5 players! It's only been around for a few Halloweens, but already it's a staple of the horror game genre, spawning a pile of expansions and reviews! In it, players work together to explore 'manors, crypts...and derelict buildings' to look for ghosts and monsters. However, one player gets to control the monsters as 'keeper', while the rest struggle to survive. Kinda like the TV program 'Most Haunted', except no one's Derek Acorah and there's a sense of realism that the TV show could never achieve. Ouch. Check out some reviews of this brilliantly scary game by Starlit Citadel, The Dice Tower and Shut Up & Sit Down!

The Perfect Lineup of Tabletop Horror Games for a Scary Game Night

Something's lurking in the shadows of your game shelves... Seeing as it's Halloween, have a list of 'the perfect tabletop games for a scary game night' written by Ed Grabianowski. 'Zombies!!!' sets the scene and begins the line-up, followed by Gloom, Last Night on Earth, Arkham Horror and more! If you're too old to trick or treat or too sensible to wait 45 minutes in a queue for a night club dressed as a sexy warlock then THIS IS FOR YOU! For some real fright-fest gaming snacks, pop some pickled onions in pasta sauce for eyeballs and paint sausages with salmon paste for realistic but disgusting-tasting fingers. Winner of the games gets to NOT eat the food!

Operation is one of the most popular board games of all time.

Operation Save That Man! In a cruel and ironic twist of fate, it appears that the man who created the best-selling and much loved board game 'Operation', John Spinello, can't afford to pay for his own upcoming oral surgery costing $28,000. Poor John sold the game idea to Hasbro 50 years ago for $500 and they, in predictable fashion, licensed it on and made mountains of dosh from it. Not particularly Halloween themed but is there anything more terrifying than seeing the true face of capitalism?! John was going to auction off the original game prototype to raise funds, but 'Good Guy Hasbro' - in what seems like a hasty move - has planned to purchase it, hoping that the money will help pay for the surgery. Good luck with the surgery, John - no 'buzzes' or red LED noses for you!

I am baby. I rule world. Alright, alright, so it's not technically board game related, but with a face that cute, how could it not be included?! Ryan Bowden, the unofficial 'world's coolest dad', has made a MechWarrior Halloween costume for him and his son out of cardboard and PVC. The bulky structure uses the body of a grown man with the head of an adorable baby, making it both the most intimidating and cutest costume ever. It's safe to say this tiny man-baby is in charge of nap time now.
