Game of the Week - Five Tribes. Hot off the press, Five Tribes arrived in store this week looking gorgeous - these board game artists are unreal! - and sounding just as awesome. For 2-4 players, this Days of Wonder beauty comes with a unique twist on the good ol' meeple system, in that they begin the game in set places. Your job is to move them around the villages, markets and notable places that feature in the setting of Naqala, the Sultanate you're desperate to seize control of! Although a straightforward game to learn, to play it is to use the powers of calculation and cunning to make clever moves until small wins amount to massive victories! Nothin' easy 'bout that!
Girl Power is in full dice-rolling swing! Although there's always a lot of talk about the under-representation of women in video games, there's also a general consensus that it exists in our board game world, too. Elisa Teague, a game designer/industry consultant from Los Angeles, has created a Kickstarter to fund a book called 'Girls on Games', that covers the realities of being a woman in the game industry, advice for women who want careers in game companies, being taken seriously in a male-dominated category and much more! The book will feature essays and chapters written by other women in the industry, including the CEO of Looney Labs and a game developer for Pathfinder. Check it all out here!
(Note: the desperate need for this book to be published should be highlighted by the fact that when I searched 'girls board games' and 'girls on games' in Google images for an appropriate photo, I was met with games like 'Mall Madness', 'Perfect Wedding' and 'Dream Phone'. Bleugh.)
That's where I left those dice! Ancient dice and gaming tokens have been discovered at a Bronze Age burial site. The pieces, dated as being from between 3,100 and 2,900 B.C.E, come as a complete set, which is more than we can say for our own board games. The archaeologists also swear that when they uncovered the dice, they heard a faint, ghostly wail that proclaimed; 'Everyone else keeps getting sixes except me! It's not fair, I hate this game.' Our X-Wing Summer Tournament is in store this Sunday, from 11am to 4pm! There's a bunch of prizes for the winner, plus a pamphlet with information on running your own tournament - if you think you can hack it! Click here for the official Facebook event.
