Game of the Week – Mage Wars. Mage Wars is a fantasy card duelling game for 2 players. As with the classic Magic: The Gathering, each player builds their own custom deck of spells to take on their opponent. Mage Wars is much more than a simple Magic clone however, adding two key innovations. Firstly, combat takes place on a board, with creatures summoned using cards able to move around to gain tactical advantage. Secondly, players’ decks are placed into spellbooks, with all cards available at any time throughout the game, meaning you’re never stuck in a situation unable to use your favourite cards. Mage Wars is a wonderful deep game with loads of customisation and variety, perfect for those looking for a strategic fantasy fix. For more information, check out Tom Vasel’s video review.
A Love Letter to Roleplaying. We really enjoyed this article in Eurogamer about one videogamer’s experience of playing a traditional tabletop roleplaying game. As well as being a highly entertaining read, it also serves as a great reminder for just how RPGs remain unbeatable fun.
D-Day in Cardboard. The 70th anniversary of D-Day is approaching. In additional to the special D-Day Landings expansion for Memoir ’44 we mentioned a few weeks ago, arriving on the shelves soon is the highly anticipated Heroes of Normandie. Taking its inspiration from classic WW2 blockbusters, Heroes of Normandie promises to deliver an action-packed 2 player experience. To see why this game has generated so much buzz, check out Marco Arnaudo’s preview of the game.
Board Game Children – Top 50 Games. The wonderful (and sometimes very sweary) Robert Florence from Rock, Paper Shotgun is currently compiling a list of his favourite 50 boardgames of all time. The video for Rab’s number 50 to 41 is now available, and well worth a watch.
A Fantasy Classic Returns. Originally published back in 1985, Dungeonquest is a brutally tough fantasy boardgame in which players desperately attempt to collect treasure from a deadly dungeon. Famous for its punishing difficulty (with player’s characters routinely being killed within a few turns), the game is packed with charm and great fun for those who don’t mind losing (a lot). Although republished by Fantasy Flight back in 2010, the game has sadly been out of print for a number of years. However dungeon crawlers rejoice, as a new revised edition has been announced for later in the year!
